Frequently Asked Questions
No. As of the 2024 CoA eligibility relaxation, Chemistry is no longer mandatory. B.Arch requires Physics + Mathematics in 10+2, with a third subject from: Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, IT, Engineering Graphics, or Business Studies. This is a significant change from earlier requirements where PCM was mandatory.
NATA is conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA) and accepted by 450+ colleges - primarily state government and private institutions. JEE Main Paper 2A is conducted by NTA and used for JoSAA counselling (NITs, SPAs, GFTIs). You can appear for both. NATA has offline drawing + online aptitude (200 marks); JEE Main Paper 2A has Math + Aptitude + Drawing (400 marks). For IITs, you need JEE Advanced + AAT (separate from both NATA and JEE Main).
Yes. Despite NEP 2020 promoting 4-year undergraduate degrees with multiple exit points, B.Arch remains 5 years. The Council of Architecture, as the statutory body under the Architects Act 1972, has maintained the 5-year requirement. No amendment has been notified to change this.
CoA requires a minimum of 45% aggregate in 10+2 (relaxed from 50% in 2024). For SC/ST, it is typically 40%. Individual institutions may have higher requirements. NATA itself has no minimum raw score - only a non-zero percentile is required to qualify.
Maximum 2 attempts in Phase 1 for the 2026 admission cycle. This was reduced from 3 attempts allowed in 2025. NATA Phase 2 (for vacant seats) allows 1 additional attempt. The best score among attempts is considered.
AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) is a 3-hour pen-and-paper test conducted after JEE Advanced - specifically for B.Arch admission to IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi. You must first qualify JEE Advanced. AAT is a qualifying test only - it determines eligibility, not ranking. Seat allocation is based on your JEE Advanced rank via JoSAA.
Entry-level salary is lower than engineering/IT - typically ₹2.4-4 LPA (₹20,000-35,000/month) for junior architects. This is an industry reality. Mid-career (3-5 years): ₹5-8 LPA. Senior architects (10+ years): ₹15-30+ LPA. Government architects earn ₹6-20 LPA per 7th CPC scales. NIRF data shows median packages of ₹7.5 LPA (SPA Delhi) and ₹5.8 LPA (CEPT).
Yes. Under the Architects Act 1972, only CoA-registered architects can legally use the title "Architect" and sign/stamp building drawings for permit applications. Requirements: B.Arch from a CoA-recognized institution + completion of mandatory practical training. Registration fee is ₹600 (non-refundable). Without registration, you cannot independently submit building plans to authorities.
Government-aided colleges are remarkably affordable: Jadavpur University - ₹26,050 total for 5 years, Sir JJ College Mumbai - ₹25,000-63,000 total, Anna University - ₹1.65 Lakhs total. Even SPAs cost only ₹4.5-5 Lakhs for 5 years. IITs are ₹10-11 Lakhs. These are among the cheapest professional degree programmes in India.
Only if your Commerce stream included Physics and Mathematics as subjects. CoA requires Physics + Mathematics as mandatory subjects in 10+2. The third subject can be from a wide range (including Business Studies). If your Commerce curriculum included Physics + Math, you are eligible. If not, B.Arch is not an option - consider B.Des (no subject restrictions) instead.
CoA mandates a minimum of 1 semester (~90-100 working days) of practical training under a CoA-registered architect with at least 3-5 years of experience. This is typically in the 7th or 8th semester. An internship report/logbook is mandatory for degree completion. This practical training is also a prerequisite for CoA registration after graduation.
Depends on your interest. B.Arch is for those who want to design buildings and built environments - it leads to a licensed professional career. B.Des is broader - product design, UX, fashion, communication design. B.Arch has lower entry-level salaries (₹3-5 LPA) but offers professional licensing (CoA). B.Des has higher starting salaries at top institutes (₹6-15 LPA from IIT/NID) but no licensing. B.Arch requires 5 years and Math in 10+2; B.Des takes 4 years and accepts any stream.
NIRF 2025 Architecture & Planning top 10: IIT Roorkee (#1), NIT Calicut (#2), IIT Kharagpur (#3), IIEST Shibpur (#4), Jamia Millia Islamia (#5), CEPT Ahmedabad (#6), NIT Rourkela (#7), SPA Delhi (#8), NIT Trichy (#9), VNIT Nagpur (#10). SPA Delhi slipped from #5 (2024) to #8 (2025).
No. CoA regulations explicitly prohibit direct lateral admission at any year or stage of B.Arch based on any qualification. Every student must complete the full 5-year programme from the first year. This is unlike some engineering programmes that allow lateral entry in the 2nd year.
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a digital approach where a 3D model contains all building information - structural, MEP, materials, costs, and schedules. Autodesk Revit is the primary BIM tool. India's BIM market is projected to reach $1,066 million by 2034. BIM proficiency is increasingly required by top firms and government projects. Architecture students should learn Revit alongside traditional AutoCAD.
