Frequently Asked Questions
B.Sc is a 3-year undergraduate programme (6 semesters). Under NEP 2020, many universities now offer a 4-year B.Sc (Honours/Research) with multiple exit points - Certificate (Year 1), Diploma (Year 2), Degree (Year 3), and Honours with Research (Year 4). The 4-year programme carries 160-180 credits and qualifies for direct PhD admission.
For central universities (DU, JNU, BHU), CUET UG is mandatory - it consists of domain science papers (50 MCQs each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Biology), conducted May 11-31, 2026. IISc Bangalore requires JEE Advanced or IAT. State universities use their own exams: WBJEE (West Bengal), MHT CET (Maharashtra), KCET (Karnataka), AP EAPCET (Andhra Pradesh). Many private universities admit on 10+2 merit.
According to NIRF 2025 College rankings: Hindu College, DU (#1), Miranda House, DU (#2), Hans Raj College, DU (#3), Kirori Mal College, DU (#4), and St. Stephen's College, DU (#5). For research-focused B.Sc, IISc Bangalore's 4-year B.Sc (Research) is the most prestigious with ~120 seats, ₹10,000/year tuition, and world-class research facilities. Madras Christian College (#16) is the top college outside Delhi.
DU colleges charge very nominal fees - ₹2,000-6,000/year for most B.Sc programmes, making the total 3-year cost ₹6,000-18,000. This includes tuition, exam, library, and student activity fees. Hostel accommodation (where available) costs additional ₹10,000-30,000/year. SC/ST/EWS students receive fee waivers and additional scholarships.
Yes. IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc) is the entry exam. JAM 2026 will be held on February 15, 2026, conducted by IIT Bombay. It has 60 questions (30 MCQ + 10 MSQ + 20 NAT) worth 100 marks in 3 hours. Negative marking applies only to MCQs. About 3,057 seats are available at IITs, plus 2,000+ seats at NITs and other institutions via CCMN counselling. IIT M.Sc graduates command ₹8-20 LPA placements.
B.Sc Honours focuses deeply on one subject (14 core papers) while B.Sc General/Pass covers three subjects at equal depth (6 papers each). Honours graduates have stronger M.Sc and research eligibility. Honours requires higher CUET cutoffs at DU. Under NEP 2020, the 4-year Honours with Research programme leads to direct PhD eligibility. Choose Honours if targeting research/M.Sc at IITs; choose General for broader exposure or competitive exam preparation.
B.Sc graduates can pursue: (1) Government research - ISRO Scientist (₹56,100/month), DRDO Scientist B, BARC Scientific Officer; (2) Teaching - TGT Science (₹35,400/month in govt schools after B.Ed); (3) Pharma/Biotech - QC Analyst, Research Associate (₹3-6 LPA); (4) IT/Data Science - Data Analyst, Developer (₹4-8 LPA for B.Sc CS); (5) Higher studies - M.Sc (IIT JAM), MBA, PhD, or professional certifications.
It depends on career goals. B.Sc is better for: (1) Research careers - natural M.Sc → PhD pipeline; (2) Government science jobs (ISRO/DRDO after M.Sc); (3) Low-budget quality education (₹6K at DU vs ₹2L+ for B.Tech). B.Tech is better for: (1) Immediate IT/industry employment; (2) Higher starting salary (₹4-9 LPA vs ₹3-6 LPA); (3) Campus placements. B.Sc + M.Sc total cost is often less than B.Tech alone, with comparable or better research career outcomes.
IISc Bangalore's 4-year B.Sc (Research) is India's most prestigious undergraduate science programme. It offers specialisations in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics, and Physics with only ~120 seats/year. Admission is through JEE Advanced rank or IAT (IISc Aptitude Test). Tuition is just ₹10,000/year with hostel at ~₹60,000/year. Students do original research from Year 1 under IISc faculty. Many graduates go on to top PhD programmes at MIT, Stanford, and Caltech.
CUET UG domain science papers have 50 MCQs each (attempt 40) in 60 minutes, with +5 for correct and −1 for wrong answers. Students choose domain subjects based on their B.Sc specialisation - PCM for Physics/CS, PCB for Biology/Biotech. A General Test (75 MCQs, 60 min) is also required by some universities. CUET UG 2026 is scheduled for May 11-31 in CBT mode. Scores are used by ~48-50 central universities.
B.Sc Data Science is the fastest-growing B.Sc specialisation. India's data analytics market is growing at 27% CAGR. Entry-level placements range from ₹4-8 LPA at companies like TCS, Infosys, and analytics firms. Christ University, SRM, and Manipal offer dedicated programmes. After B.Sc Data Science, students can pursue M.Sc in Data Science/AI at IITs or abroad, or enter industry directly in data analyst, ML engineer, or business intelligence roles.
Yes. B.Sc graduates are fully eligible for CAT (IIMs), XAT (XLRI), GMAT (international), and other MBA entrance exams. B.Sc graduates often excel in the quantitative sections of MBA entrances due to their strong mathematical foundation. MBA in Business Analytics, Operations Research, or Technology Management is a natural fit. IIM placements average ₹20-35+ LPA.
Key scholarships: (1) INSPIRE SHE by DST - ₹80,000/year for top 1% of 10+2 science students pursuing B.Sc; (2) National Scholarship Portal - central and state government merit-cum-means scholarships; (3) KVPY (now integrated into INSPIRE) - for research-oriented students; (4) University-specific: DU fee waivers for EWS/SC/ST, IISc covers tuition + provides stipends; (5) Private: Reliance Foundation, Tata Trusts, and industry-sponsored scholarships for meritorious students.
NEP 2020 has transformed B.Sc significantly: (1) 4-year programme with multiple exits - Certificate/Diploma/Degree/Honours; (2) Major-minor system allows combining Physics major with Data Science minor, for example; (3) Academic Bank of Credits enables transfer between universities; (4) 4-year Honours graduates can enter PhD directly, bypassing M.Sc; (5) Multi-disciplinary approach - B.Sc students can take humanities/commerce electives. DU, JNU, and most central universities have adopted this from 2022-23.
B.Sc qualifies for: (1) SSC CGL - Tax Inspector, Auditor, ASI (₹35,400-44,900/month); (2) IBPS PO/Clerk - banking positions; (3) Railways - various technical posts; (4) Teaching - TGT Science after B.Ed (₹35,400/month basic). After M.Sc: (5) ISRO Scientist/Engineer (₹56,100/month); (6) DRDO Scientist B; (7) BARC Scientific Officer; (8) Drug Inspector; (9) CSIR/ICMR research positions through NET JRF (₹37,000/month). B.Sc with UPSC also leads to IAS/IPS/IFS.
