Frequently Asked Questions
The primary entrance exam is CUET PG (Common University Entrance Test - Post Graduate), conducted by NTA - 75 MCQs, 300 marks, 90 minutes. ~185-200+ universities accept CUET PG, including all central universities (JNU, DU, BHU, AMU). JNU no longer uses JNUEE for MA - all MA admissions are now via CUET PG. TISS uses TISSNET. IIT Madras requires GATE XH score. Some private universities (Ashoka, OP Jindal) have their own admission processes.
JNU charges approximately ₹346/year - a total of about ₹692 for the entire 2-year MA. This makes JNU one of the most affordable universities in the world for postgraduate education. Even hostel fees are minimal at ₹3,720/year. JNU is ranked #2 nationally in NIRF 2025 University rankings. The massive subsidy reflects its status as a centrally-funded university.
No. JNU has discontinued JNUEE for MA admissions. All MA programmes at JNU now use CUET PG scores for admission. JNUEE is retained only for certain PhD programmes. Similarly, BHU PET has been discontinued for MA - BHU also uses CUET PG. This centralisation happened as part of the nationwide adoption of CUET.
Political Science (PSIR), History, Sociology, Public Administration, and Geography are the most popular UPSC optionals - and doing MA in any of these provides deep preparation for both the Optional paper and General Studies. Public Administration and Geography are considered the most scoring optionals. The DU/JNU ecosystem, with proximity to coaching hubs in Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, creates the strongest UPSC preparation pipeline.
UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted by NTA twice a year in 85 subjects. It determines eligibility for: (1) Assistant Professor positions, and (2) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for PhD. JRF fellowship is ₹37,000/month (revised from ₹31,000) for the first 2 years, then ₹42,000/month (SRF). With DA (50%) and HRA, effective income is ~₹60,000-65,000/month in metro cities. JRF is extremely competitive - only ~0.69% of appeared candidates qualify.
Entry-level: ₹2.4-6 LPA (varies widely by career path). Content writing: ₹2.5-4 LPA entry. Journalism: ₹3-5 LPA. Assistant Professor (government): ₹57,700 basic under 7th CPC (~₹90,000-1.1L gross/month). UPSC IAS: ₹56,100 basic (~₹80,000-1L/month). Banking IBPS PO: ~₹75,000-76,000/month in-hand. The highest earning potential is in civil services, academia (senior professor), and policy/consulting roles.
It depends on the university. Most central universities (DU, BHU, UoH) require a BA in the relevant discipline - e.g., BA English for MA English. However, some programmes accept any BA: TISS MA Social Work, TISS MA Development Studies, Ashoka University MA, and some JNU programmes. Always check the specific eligibility of the programme you are applying to.
Whether a university offers MA or M.Sc depends on departmental classification, not quality. Both are treated as equivalent by employers, UGC NET, and PhD admissions. MA Economics is more theory/policy-oriented; M.Sc Economics (at DSE Delhi, ISI) is more quantitative/econometric. MA Psychology focuses on counselling/social aspects; M.Sc Psychology is more research/neuropsychology-oriented. Both are equally eligible for RCI registration (M.Phil Clinical Psychology). Choose based on programme quality and faculty, not the degree title.
Under NEP 2020, the traditional 3-year BA leads to the standard 2-year MA. But 4-year BA Honours graduates can do a 1-year MA, and 4-year BA Honours with Research holders can skip MA and go directly to PhD. This creates multiple pathways. Central universities have adopted the 4-year FYUP from 2023-24 onwards, though the 1-year MA option is still being rolled out and not universally available.
Yes. MA qualifies you for: SSC CGL (Group B/C central government posts), IBPS/SBI PO and Clerk exams (any graduate eligible), State PCS exams, PGT teaching positions (MA + B.Ed), Assistant Professor positions (MA + NET), and Official Language Officer posts (MA Hindi). Government banking jobs (IBPS PO: ~₹75,000/month) and teaching positions (PGT: ₹47,600+ basic under 7th CPC) are particularly popular post-MA career paths.
MA Economics has the highest earning potential among MA specializations - ₹5-9 LPA entry, ₹15-25 LPA senior (in policy, consulting, RBI, banking). MA Psychology is growing due to mental health demand. However, the highest individual salaries come from UPSC Civil Services (any MA subject) and senior academic positions (Professor: ₹1,44,200 basic under 7th CPC). The career path matters more than the specific MA subject.
IIT Madras offers MA through its Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) department - in Development Studies, Economics, English Studies, and Public Policy (new from 2026-27). Admission requires a valid GATE score in the XH (Humanities & Social Sciences) paper. Intake is 25 seats per stream. Fees are ₹80,000-1.62 Lakhs total. IIT Madras MA is unique for its interdisciplinary approach, combining humanities with STEM electives.
It depends. Most central universities and IITs accept GATE/NET scores for PhD admission. However, under NEP 2020, 4-year BA Honours with Research holders can proceed directly to PhD without MA or NET. Many universities also have their own PhD entrance exams. UGC has issued guidelines allowing universities to admit PhD scholars based on their own entrance tests even without NET, though NET/JRF holders get priority and fellowship. Without NET/JRF, you will not receive the ₹37,000/month fellowship.
M.Phil is being phased out under NEP 2020. UGC has directed universities to discontinue M.Phil programmes, and many central universities (JNU, DU, BHU) have already stopped M.Phil admissions. The policy promotes direct PhD entry after MA. For clinical psychology (RCI registration), the M.Phil Clinical Psychology programme continues as it is a professional requirement, not just an academic degree.
JNU has approximately 1,251 MA seats across its schools - including ~96 in Political Science, ~105 in History, ~50 in International Relations, and seats across Hindi, Economics, Sociology, and other departments. JNU uses CUET PG for all MA admissions. The combination of India's #2 NIRF ranking, ₹692 total fees, strong faculty, and campus culture makes JNU one of the most sought-after MA destinations.
