IIFT 2025 Exam Pattern Overview

The IIFT (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade) MBA (IB) entrance exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in online Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. The exam is 120 minutes long with a total of 300 marks spread across 110 questions in four distinct sections. There is no sectional time limit, allowing candidates to manage their own time across sections.

IIFT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Understanding the eligibility criteria is the first step towards preparing for Indian Institute of Foreign Trade MBA Entrance Exam (IIFT). The exam is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) at the national level for candidates seeking admission to Management & Business programmes across India. Candidates must carefully verify that they meet all requirements before filling the application form to avoid rejection at a later stage.

IIFT conducts its own independent selection process - it is not affiliated with JoSAA, MCC, CSAB, or any state counselling body. After NTA declares results and the All India Merit List, IIFT (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade) manages the entire post-exam selection and seat allotment process directly.

Result Declaration and Score Card Download: NTA publishes IIFT results on its official portal. Candidates can download their scorecard. IIFT releases a separate merit list with sectional and overall cut-offs for each campus (Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada, and Dar es Salaam). Only candidates clearing all sectional cut-offs are considered for shortlisting.

Shortlisting for WAT-PI: IIFT shortlists candidates for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) based on the NTA merit list. Shortlisted candidates receive call letters via email and must confirm participation through the IIFT admissions portal. WAT-PI centres are typically held at Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

WAT and Personal Interview (PI): The WAT involves writing a structured essay on a topic related to international business, trade policy, or current affairs - typically 300-400 words in 20 minutes. The PI panel assesses domain knowledge (especially international trade and economics), communication skills, and business awareness. WAT-PI rounds are conducted between February and March.

Final Merit List and Seat Allotment: IIFT prepares a composite score using NTA score, WAT, PI, and academic profile (graduation marks, work experience if any). A final merit list is published campus-wise. Candidates are allotted seats at IIFT Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada, or Dar es Salaam based on rank and preference filled during registration.

Document Verification: Selected candidates must report for document verification with originals and self-attested copies of: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, graduation degree/provisional certificate, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD as applicable), valid photo ID, and NTA scorecard.

Fee Payment and Admission Confirmation: After document verification, candidates must pay the programme fee (approximately ₹14-16 lakhs for the full MBA-IB programme) within the stipulated deadline to confirm their seat. IIFT accepts payment via NEFT/RTGS and the admissions portal. Non-payment within the deadline results in forfeiture of the allotted seat.

Waitlist Movement: IIFT typically releases 2-3 waitlist rounds after the first seat allotment. Candidates on the waitlist are upgraded as confirmed students forfeit seats. All communications are sent to the registered email ID - monitor it closely during April-June.

1. Understand the Exam Pattern and Section Weightage

IIFT 2025 is conducted by NTA and tests four sections: Quantitative Aptitude (QA), Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation (LR & DI), Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), and General Awareness (GA). Each section carries a sectional cut-off, so balanced preparation across all four areas is mandatory - ignoring GA or LR can result in disqualification even with a high overall score.

IIFT cutoff is the minimum score required by candidates to qualify the examination and become eligible for the next stage of admission. The cutoff is determined by National Testing Agency (NTA) based on factors like total number of candidates, difficulty level of the paper, and availability of seats. Section-wise Breakdown

Question Types

All questions are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options and a single correct answer. There are no non-MCQ or TITA (Type In The Answer) questions in IIFT, unlike CAT.

Negative Marking Rules

• For VARC, DILR, and QA sections: 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect response (i.e., one-third of the 3 marks per question).
• For General Knowledge: 0.5 marks are deducted for every incorrect response.
• No marks are deducted for unattempted questions.
• Candidates are advised to avoid random guessing, especially in high-weightage sections.

Exam Delivery & Marking

The exam is delivered across multiple cities in India in a single shift. NTA releases the answer key after the exam, and candidates can raise objections within a stipulated window. Final scores are computed after considering all valid objections. Scores are used exclusively for admission to IIFT Delhi and IIFT Kolkata MBA (IB) programs.

1. Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

• Reading Comprehension: 3-4 passages from diverse themes - economics, international trade, social issues, abstract philosophy, science & technology. Questions test inference, tone, title identification, and vocabulary in context.
• Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, foreign words commonly used in English, idioms and phrases
• Grammar & Usage: Error spotting, sentence correction, fill in the blanks (single & double), subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions
• Verbal Reasoning: Para-jumbles (rearranging sentences), para-completion, odd sentence out, sentence sequencing
• Cloze Test: Passage-based blanks testing contextual word usage
• Analogies & Word Relationships

2. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

• Data Interpretation: Bar graphs, line charts, pie charts, tables, caselets, combination charts, data sufficiency sets; common in IIFT are sets involving trade data, GDP figures, and export-import statistics
• Logical Reasoning: Syllogisms, blood relations, direction sense, seating arrangements (linear & circular), scheduling and sequencing puzzles
• Critical Reasoning: Strengthening/weakening arguments, assumption-based questions, course of action, statement-conclusion
• Data Sufficiency: Two-statement DS problems requiring logical deduction without solving
• Input-Output: Machine-input type reasoning problems

3. Quantitative Analysis (QA)

• Arithmetic: Percentages, profit & loss, simple & compound interest, ratio & proportion, time-speed-distance, time & work, averages, mixtures & alligations
• Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, logarithms, progressions (AP/GP/HP), surds and indices
• Number System: Divisibility rules, HCF/LCM, prime numbers, factorials, cyclicity, remainders, unit digit problems
• Geometry & Mensuration: Triangles (congruence, similarity, Pythagoras), circles, polygons, coordinate geometry, areas and volumes of 2D and 3D figures
• Modern Maths: Permutation & Combination, Probability, Set Theory, Venn Diagrams, Binomial Theorem basics
• Trigonometry: Basic ratios, height and distance problems (occasionally tested)

4. General Knowledge & Current Affairs (GK)

• Business & Economy: RBI monetary policy, Union Budget 2024-25 highlights, India's GDP growth, inflation indices (CPI/WPI), major corporate mergers and acquisitions in India
• International Trade & Finance: WTO agreements, RCEP, bilateral trade deals, India's top export-import partners, foreign exchange reserves, IMF/World Bank reports
• Current Affairs (last 12 months): Major national and international events, government schemes (PM Vishwakarma, PLI, GIFT City updates), G20 outcomes, India's foreign policy milestones
• Static GK: Awards and honours (Bharat Ratna, Nobel Prize 2024), sports championships, India's first/largest institutions, important constitutional provisions

2. Build a Strong General Awareness Foundation

GA is the section that differentiates IIFT from CAT. Cover current affairs (last 12 months), international trade, WTO regulations, India's FDI policy, Union Budget highlights, and static GK (capitals, currencies, trade agreements). Read The Hindu or The Economic Times daily and use Manorama Yearbook 2025 and Lucent's GK as reference books.

4. Follow a Structured 4-Month Study Plan

Months 1-2: Build conceptual clarity - cover QA topics (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems) and VARC (grammar, RC strategies). Month 3: Focus on LR & DI and begin daily GA reading. Month 4: Full-length practice tests and revision. Dedicate at least 6-7 hours daily, with 1 hour exclusively for GA current affairs.

5. practice tests Strategy Is Critical

Attempt at least 20-25 IIFT-specific practice tests (not CAT practice tests alone). IIFT's interface and time pressure differ significantly from CAT. Analyse every mock for section-wise time allocation - most toppers spend 25-30 minutes on GA, 35 minutes on QA, and split the remainder between VARC and LR & DI. Use practice tests from Career Launcher, TIME, or IMS which offer IIFT-pattern tests.

6. Master Time Management Under 120 Minutes

With 120 minutes and sectional cut-offs, practice moving decisively between sections. Avoid spending more than 2 minutes on any single question in QA or LR. In VARC, read RC passages actively - IIFT passages often relate to global trade, economics, and geopolitics, which aligns with the MBA International Business focus.

7. Focus on High-Weightage QA Topics

Arithmetic (percentage, profit & loss, time-speed-distance, ratio & proportion), Number Systems, Permutation & Combination, and Geometry consistently appear. Avoid spending too much time on advanced topics like Complex Numbers which appear rarely. Solve at least 50 topic-wise questions before moving to practice tests.

8. Exam Day Preparation

Carry your NTA admit card, valid government-issued photo ID, and a passport-size photograph. The exam is computer-based - practice using the NTA practice tests interface available on the official website. Reach the exam centre 45 minutes early. Do not attempt questions with very low confidence given the 1/3 negative marking penalty. On exam day, start with your strongest section to build momentum and secure that section's cut-off early.
