National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Exam (NIFT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for admission to Design programmes across India. The exam is conducted in offline mode with a duration of 3 hours for a total of 200 marks . NIFT is held once a year.

NIFT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Understanding the eligibility criteria is the first step towards preparing for National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Exam (NIFT). The exam is conducted by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at the national level for candidates seeking admission to Design programmes across India. Candidates must carefully verify that they meet all requirements before filling the application form to avoid rejection at a later stage.

NIFT Counselling Process

NIFT conducts its own centralized counselling process managed directly by NIFT Headquarters, New Delhi (not JoSAA, MCC, or CSAB). After declaration of results, eligible candidates participate in the following steps:

Candidates who do not report on the designated date or fail document verification forfeit their seat, and it is offered to the next candidate on the waiting list. The entire counselling process typically runs from April through July following the February examination.

• Result & Merit List Publication: NIFT publishes separate merit lists for CAT-based programmes (B.Des) and GAT-only programmes (B.FTech, MFM, etc.) on the official NIFT website (nift.ac.in). Shortlisted candidates are called for Situation Test (for B.Des) before final merit is decided.
• Situation Test (B.Des only): Shortlisted B.Des candidates attend a hands-on studio test at their designated NIFT campus. This is a physical material-handling test where candidates are judged on creativity, dexterity, and presentation. Marks from Situation Test are combined with CAT+GAT scores to generate the final merit list.
• Online Counselling Registration: Candidates on the final merit list register on the NIFT counselling portal using their application number and password. A non-refundable counselling registration fee (approx. ₹2,000 for General; ₹1,000 for SC/ST/PwD) must be paid online via net banking or UPI.
• Choice Filling & Locking: Candidates fill preferences for programme-campus combinations across all 20 NIFT campuses (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Kannur, Patna, Raebareli, Shillong, Srinagar, Surat, Tarapur, Navi Mumbai, Panchkula). Preferences must be carefully ordered and locked before the deadline - changes are not permitted after locking.
• Seat Allotment - Round 1: Seats are allotted based on merit rank, category (General/OBC/SC/ST/PwD/Kashmiri Migrant), and choice order. Allotment results are published online. Candidates must accept the allotted seat and pay the first instalment of tuition fees (approx. ₹50,000-₹80,000 depending on campus) within the stipulated window to confirm the seat.
• Seat Allotment - Round 2 (Spot/Sliding Round): Vacant seats after Round 1 are re-advertised. Candidates who accepted a seat in Round 1 may slide to a better preference if available, or new candidates from the waiting list may be accommodated. Fee already paid is adjusted.
• Document Verification & Reporting: After final allotment, candidates report to their allotted NIFT campus on the specified date with original documents: Class 10 & 12 mark sheets and certificates, NIFT admit card and scorecard, category certificate (if applicable), transfer certificate, passport-size photographs, and Aadhaar card. The campus academic section verifies all documents before admission is confirmed.
• Fee Payment & Enrolment: The remaining tuition fee balance for the semester is paid at the campus. Annual tuition fees for B.Des range from approximately ₹1.95 lakh to ₹2.20 lakh depending on the campus. Hostel accommodation (where available) is allotted separately based on availability and distance of domicile.

NIFT Exam Pattern

The NIFT Entrance Exam 2025 is conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate design and technology programmes across 18 NIFT campuses in India. The exam comprises two distinct papers - the General Ability Test (GAT) and the Creative Ability Test (CAT) - together carrying a total of 200 marks.

NIFT 2026 Cutoff Scores

NIFT cutoff is the minimum score required by candidates to qualify the examination and become eligible for the next stage of admission. The cutoff is determined by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) based on factors like total number of candidates, difficulty level of the paper, and availability of seats. The exam is conducted for a total of 200 marks. Candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PwD) generally have lower cutoff scores compared to the General category.

Paper 1: General Ability Test (GAT)

GAT is an objective multiple-choice paper. Duration: 120 minutes. Total marks: 100. Each correct answer carries 1 mark. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

Paper 2: Creative Ability Test (CAT)

The CAT is a studio-based offline test assessing a candidate's innate creative and design aptitude. Candidates are given drawing sheets and required to produce original artwork based on a given theme or situational brief. Duration: 180 minutes. Total marks: 100. The test evaluates creativity, use of colour, composition, line quality, visualisation ability, and originality of thought. No negative marking applies.

Total Combined Marks: 200 (GAT 100 + CAT 100). Final merit is calculated as a weighted composite of GAT, CAT, and for postgraduate programmes, Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD/PI) rounds conducted at respective NIFT campuses.

Build a Structured Study Schedule

Divide your preparation into three phases over 3-4 months. Phase 1 (Month 1-2): Focus on GAT fundamentals - quantitative ability and English grammar. Master the Creative Ability Test

The CAT is the differentiator in NIFT selection. Practice drawing from imagination, not just copying. Work on color theory using poster colors or watercolors. Practice themes like festival costumes, nature-inspired designs, and urban lifestyle. Study previous year CAT prompts (available via NIFT official website and coaching materials) to understand the style of questions expected.

General Knowledge & Fashion Awareness

NIFT GAT tests awareness of Indian and international fashion weeks, prominent designers (Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar), textile traditions of India, and recent trends in sustainable fashion. Maintain a weekly GK log from October through January covering fashion, art, and design news.

Exam-Day Tips

• Carry your own sketching materials for CAT (pencils HB/2B, eraser, sharpener, poster colors, brushes) as the list is specified in the admit card.
• Reach the centre at least 30 minutes early - NIFT centres are often in major metros and traffic delays are common.
• In GAT, attempt English and communication sections first as they are less time-consuming, then move to quantitative ability.
• For CAT, read the prompt fully before picking up your pencil - planning your composition for 2-3 minutes before drawing significantly improves the final output.
